For all his mean and moody roles, it’s easy to forget Tom Hardy can be a chipper chappy at times — not least in some new footage from the set of his upcoming film, Venom.

The clip from the previously closed set was released online yesterday (January 11), though it was first broadcast live at Brazil Comic Con Experience in December during a panel with director Ruben Fleischer.

“I can promise you badass action, Venom’s dark humor, and I can also promise you an absolutely stunning performance by Tom Hardy,” Ruben told the crowd, before Tom himself appeared on the screen.

Aw, look at that little smile. We knew he had it in him.

Clearly Tom’s having a good time on set, where filming began in October. It’s due to restart on location in San Francisco later this month, where the Taboo star will be joined by fellow cast members Riz Ahmed, Michelle Williams, and Jenny Slate.

In the video, Tom gives his “word of honor” that he will “do everything [he] can to deliver the best Venom that [he] possibly can muster.” Go Tom!

We’re very curious to see how his interpretation compares to Venom as portrayed by Topher Grace, who played him in 2007’s Spider-Man 3.

A murderous alien parasite who becomes the archenemy of Spider-Man, Venom is one of Marvel Comics’s most enigmatic and badass characters, meaning expectations are high for this movie.

We had a glimpse last month of what he might look like, but yesterday (January 11) a photo was also released that finally showed Tom as Venom:

Okay, so he looks quite Tom Hardy-y there. Don’t get us wrong — we’re not complaining (though some Marvel fans were a bit disappointed).

But don’t worry; they’ve not run out of money for make-up. The photo shows Venom’s alter ego Eddie Brock, the journalist and human who is “possessed” by a murderous alien parasite. We expect it’ll be a while before we see him in his full venomous glory.

Venom is due to hit theaters on October 5 this year.

Can you tell Tom’s enjoying himself?
