Saoirse Ronan looks set to continue her awards streak, thanks to the trailer for her next film On Chesil Beach, released yesterday (February 22).
She’s recently clocked up nominations for her performances in films like Lady Bird and Brooklyn, not to mention her breakout role at the tender age of 13 in 2007’s Atonement.
Her next film is also an adaptation of a novel by Ian McEwan, who wrote the books behind Enduring Love starring Daniel Craig, and A Child in Time starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
On Chesil Beach tells the story of a young newlywed couple who spend their honeymoon on — you’ve guessed it — a beach in Dorset, England in the summer of 1962.
Saoirse plays Florence, a sheltered woman who’s preparing to marry Edward (Billy Howle), a graduate student from a drastically different background, much to the dismay of her parents, played by Emily Watson and Samuel West.
To make things worse, things don’t exactly go to plan on their wedding night, as becomes abundantly clear in the trailer:
The film has had rave reviews on the festival circuit, with particular praise for director Dominic Cooke, who makes his feature debut after directing the British TV drama and Shakespeare adaptation The Hollow Crown.
On Chesil Beach opens in theaters on May 18.
