It’s Official: Tobias Menzies Will Replace Matt Smith as Prince Philip in ‘The Crown’

Who’ll take over from Matt Smith as Prince Philip in The Crown has been one of the hottest topics in TV since… oooh… who’ll take over from Matt Smith as the Doctor.

Names such as Paul BettanyMatthew Macfadyen and even Hugh Laurie have been thrown into the ring, plus there’s been a lot of wishful thinking (David Tennant, anyone?).

We were finally put out of our misery last night (March 28), when a single tweet from Netflix announced the new Duke of Edinburgh would be…(drum roll, please)… Tobias Menzies, aka Frank/Jonathan Randall in Outlander, Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones, and Captain James Fitzjames in new AMC drama The Terror.

Tobias’ Outlander co-star Caitriona Balfe was among the first to congratulate him on his new appointment:

Congrats indeed. Tobias will join Olivia Colman in the third and fourth seasons of the epic royal drama, as it moves from the 1960s through the 1970s and 1980s. It won’t be the first time the pair have worked together: Olivia played intelligence officer Angela Burr and Tobias her superior Geoffrey Dromgoole in The Night Manager.

Other castings have yet to be officially announced — but it’s highly likely Helena Bonham Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret.

What do you think about Tobias replacing Matt Smith?
