We brought you news a few weeks back that The Darkest Hour director Joe Wright has a new film in the works. And now we know it’ll star Arrival‘s Amy Adams.
The Woman in the Window has all the hallmarks of a Hitchcockian thriller. Deadline reports Amy will play Anna Fox, an agoraphobic child psychologist with an alcohol problem, who spends all her time at home spying on her neighbors — rather like the protagonist of Rear Window. Just like photographer Jeff, played memorably by James Stewart, Anna witnesses a violent crime… or thinks she does.
And then there’s the tile, which eschews the current trend of “Girl” being in the title of female-led thrillers (think Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train), but it sets a chilling tone nonetheless with its echo of more vintage spooky tales like The Woman in White or The Woman in Black.
Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter Tracey Letts (August: Osage County), the film is based on a novel by A.J. Finn that’s been flying off the shelves since being published in January 2018.
Director Joe Wright is also riding high after Gary Oldman, the lead in his Winston Churchill film The Darkest Hour, won the Best Actor Oscar. Joe’s films are often critically acclaimed, with Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Anna Karenina doing particularly well during awards season.
It’s prompted us to wonder if this might be the film that finally wins Amy her first Oscar. She’s been nominated no less than five times (four times as Best Supporting Actress, and once for Best Actress for her performance in American Hustle), but so far has not won, despite barnstorming performances in movies such as Nocturnal Animals and Arrival. Perhaps this role will be the one everyone finally agrees on.
