Last night (May 9), Phoebe Waller Bridge let us in on some Star Wars secrets, specifically how she was turned into a CGI-animated droid.
The Killing Eve creator plays the droid L3-37 in upcoming spinoff Solo, which goes back to before 1977’s Episode IV: A New Hope to tell the origins story of a young Han Solo.
We saw L3 fleetingly in the trailer, but we couldn’t tell if those were Phoebe’s mannerisms as well as her voice. But did she in fact perform in character on set, like Benedict Cumberbatch when he played the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit?
Well, it turns out, yes, she did, and wearing quite an uncomfortable looking costume too. Phoebe was a guest on The Tonight Show last night (May 9), where she talked to host Jimmy Fallon about the recent Met Gala and her love of karaoke, before discussing her Star Wars role.
“I still can’t believe it,” she says of playing L3-37, before quipping about the droid’s skeletal frame: “My body has never looked better.”
It turns out our Pheebs “body”-acted the part, as well as voiced it. She shared a photo of her in costume on set, before going into Fleabag-esque detail about how hard it made going to the bathroom.
The result, though, was worth it. L3-37 is a sort of female C3-PO, albeit with a fearless sense of humor and take-no-prisoners personality, as seen in an exclusive clip from the movie:
What do you think of Phoebe’s transformation?
