Tom Hollander has said he’s “very excited” to join Baptiste, the upcoming spin-off of Golden Globe and BAFTA-nominated crime drama The Missing.
Tom told the BBC: “I am very excited to be working with [writers] Harry and Jack Williams. They are brilliant storytellers of nuance and suspense.”
You’re telling us, Tom. Harry and Jack were behind The Missing, the anthology series about a missing child and the operation to find them led by French detective Julien Baptise (Tchéky Karyo). The first season aired in the U.S. in 2014, followed by a second in 2017.
For their side, the Williams brothers are just as excited about Tom’s casting: “We have wanted to work with Tom for some time and are so pleased he is going to play Edward in Baptiste,” they were quoted as saying. “Tom’s huge range and formidable talent make him a wonderful addition to our cast.”
We’ll say. Tom has been one of our favorite actors, from his early appearance in Absolutely Fabulous (look it up!) and Pirates of the Caribbean, through Rev, The Night Manager and Taboo.
Details about his character are scarce, but he’ll likely play the victim of a crime, or the parent of a missing child, as James Nesbitt, Frances O’Connor, David Morrissey, and Keeley Hawes did in seasons one and two of The Missing.
We do know the new series will shift the action to another European country, after the first season introduced us to Baptiste in France, and the second saw him travel to Germany. This time he becomes embroiled in a case while on holiday in Amsterdam, after the Dutch capital’s chief of police – who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend – seeks out his help.
Both Tchéky Karyo and Anastasia Hille are reprising their roles of Julien and his wife Celia, as Baptiste starts filming this summer and will air in the U.K. later this year. Given the success of The Missing, we expect it’ll cross the Atlantic soon too.
Are you excited to see Tom star in this new spin-off series?
