The Game of Thrones theory machine has gone into overdrive after Maisie Williams referred to herself as “last woman standing” on Instagram yesterday (July 8).
Maisie plays Arya Stark in the epic fantasy series, which is due to end when the final six-part season airs next spring, and has been filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland, since last October.
As production draws to a close, members of the GoT cast have been marking the end of the show in their own way. Emilia Clarke posted a selfie last month, while her co-star Nathalie Emmanuel posted a photo of the sun rising above Belfast. And then there’s Kit Harington, who high-footed it out of there to marry his one-time co-star Rose Leslie, and Sophie Turner, who dyed her hair blonde as soon as her time as red-headed Sansa Stark was over.
None of them gave anything away, of course, as details of the production remain shrouded in secrecy. Until Maisie, that is, who posted the following picture yesterday (July 8):
Oo-er. So wait, does this mean the show famous for its graphic violence and unexpected bloodbaths won’t have a happy ending?
Maisie captioned her photo, “Goodbye Belfast. Goodbye Arya. Goodbye Game of Thrones. What a joy I’ve had. Here’s to the adventures to come.” Those “adventures” include the lead role in a stage play in London, England, a coming-of-age film called Departures, and Marvel horror movie The New Mutants, so it’s fair to say her worries about not getting any roles after Game of Thrones were unfounded.
Maisie then added the intriguing hashtags “#lastwomanstanding” and “#barely,” prompting fans to dissect what she might mean. Is she indicating Arya is the last character to meet her fate, or the only one, in true GoT fashion, not to die? Or do her words simply mean that Maisie herself is the last female actor on set? In which case, why are her sneakers covered in blood?
We’re just going to have to wait until spring 2019 to find out.
What do you think Maisie’s message means?
