Rosamund Pike was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Amy Dunne in Gone Girl, so it’s no surprise her next role would be in another psychological thriller adapted from a novel.
What is surprising, is that it will be for a TV show and not a movie. Rosamund hasn’t acted in live-action television since the BBC’s 2011 adaptation of Women in Love, despite appearing in period dramas like Wives and Daughters (1999) and Love in a Cold Climate (2001) at the start of her career.
Deadline reports she’ll play the lead role in The Banker’s Wife, a TV adaptation of a “high stakes international thriller” set in the world of global finance by author Cristina Alger.
Rosamund will take on the role of the titular wife, who realizes her life is in danger when she discovers her husband — who went missing when his plane crashed in the Alps — had been keeping a shady client list on an encrypted laptop and his death was no accident.
The novel was only published in July 2018, showing just how insatiable the demand is currently for fast-paced thrillers full of suspense and intrigue. It’s already been compared to Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn — the writer also responsible for Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams in her first major role on the small screen — and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, which in 2016 was made into a well-received film starring Emily Blunt.
Rosamund will also be executive producer on the project, working with an all-female creative team including producer Sherry Marsh (Pose), top TV writer-creator Meredith Stiehm (The Bridge) and top TV director Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland).
And then there’s the other female lead, the journalist who helps Rosamund’s character investigate what really happened to her husband. There’s no word yet on who’ll play that role, but if recent landmark TV shows are anything to go by, it’ll be another A-lister.
