Jenna Coleman has had to dig deep for her latest role, as shown in a new trailer for the four-part drama The Cry.
The Doctor Who and Victoria star plays young mom Joanna, whose baby goes missing on a trip to Australia. As public scrutiny pushes her and husband Alistair (Top of the Lake‘s Ewen Leslie) to the edge, she must get to the bottom of what happened to baby Noah.
It’s every parent’s nightmare, of course, and one that Jenna was originally a little wary of depicting, given that she herself is not a mother (not even if you count the seven – 7! – children she’s “had” as Queen Victoria).
“I spent a good first chunk of it just thinking they’d completely miscast – and why on earth me?” she told the Guardian.
“I’m not a mother! I really kind of hit myself over the head with it. I felt there was obviously something I wouldn’t be able to capture. It was something so… well, primal that I haven’t literally experienced. And I’ve really struggled with that.”
From the looks of the trailer though, Jenna needn’t have worried.

The Cry is an adaptation of Helen FitzGerald‘s bestselling novel of the same name. It’s due to air in the U.K. and Australia soon, and stream on Sundance Now in the U.S. soon after.
