Is Tom Hiddleston About to Reprise the Role of Loki on TV?

The trailer for the new Captain Marvel movie got everyone worked up yesterday (September 18), but there was another Marvel news item that caught our eye.

Variety reports that Loki, the tricksy Prince of Asgard played by Tom Hiddleston, may be about to get his own standalone show. That’s eight episodes of pure mischief.

Also slated for a standalone show is the Scarlett Witch, played on screen by Elizabeth Olsen, though it’s unclear when the shows might be set in each character’s timeline. The smart guess — given the recent, uh, events in Avengers: Infinity War — is the shows would be prequels, but at such an early stage of development it’s hard to tell.

What we do know is the shows would be made for Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which is expected to launch in late 2019. The as-yet unnamed service will be the online home of Disney movies and TV shows, including a new Star Wars series overseen by director Jon Favreau, a show based on High School Musical, and a live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp.

Disney also owns Marvel Entertainment, the company responsible for Loki’s earlier outings in Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). That means these shows will likely be tied into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), unlike other Marvel standalone TV shows such as Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke CageDaredevil, and Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and, most importantly, will feature the same actors who played the characters on the big screen.

In the case of Loki, that means Tom, who’s been a bit quiet lately. Hopefully this news heralds a Hiddle-tastic 2019.

Are you excited to see Tom as Loki on the small screen?
