First Look: ‘Doctor Foster’s’ Suranne Jones Stars in Female-Led Period Drama ‘Gentleman Jack’

The cast of Gentleman Jack is shaping up with newly-announced additions of The Killing‘s Sofie Gråbøl and Happy Valley‘s Katherine Kelly.

They join Doctor Foster‘s Suranne Jones, who plays the lead role of Anne Lister, a real-life nineteenth-century landowner and industrialist whose relationships and charismatic lifestyle has led to her being dubbed Britain’s first modern lesbian.

The series will chart Anne’s determination to transform the fortunes of her faded ancestral home Shibden Hall, after returning to West Yorkshire, England in 1832.

Suranne posted a photo of herself in character yesterday (November 19), announcing the new additions to the cast:

According to Deadline, Anne’s wife Ann Walker will be played by Peaky BlindersSophie Rundle, while Katherine will play Ann’s sister Elizabeth Sunderland, and Sofie will play Queen Marie of Denmark.

The impressive cast doesn’t end there, either. It also features the Fifth Doctor Peter DavisonGemma Whelan, known for her role as Yara on Game of ThronesTimothy West (Last Tango in Halifax); Gemma Jones (God’s Own Country, Bridget Jones’s Diary); Stephanie Cole (Waiting for God); Happy Valley co-stars Amelia Bullmore and Vincent Franklin; and Shaun Dooley (Broadchurch).

The eight-part series is currently being filmed in England and Denmark, with Happy Valley and To Walk Invisible writer Sally Wainwright in the director’s chair.

It will air on the BBC in the U.K. and on HBO in the U.S. some time in 2019.
