Dream team alert! Steven Spielberg‘s highly anticipated new film The Post stars Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, and we’ve finally got a chance to see what all the fuss is about.
The first trailer was revealed last night (October 7), showing Meryl and Tom in their roles as Katherine Graham, America’s first female newspaper publisher, and Ben Bradlee, the editor of one of her titles The Washington Post.
The film tells the story of the Pentagon Papers. In June of 1971, the newspaper raced its rival The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four presidents.
And if the stellar pairing of Streep/Hanks wasn’t enough, check out the supporting cast, which includes American Crime Story: the People vs. O.J. Simpson‘s Sarah Paulson and Bruce Greenwood, The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys, Better Call Saul‘s Bob Odenkirk, Arrested Development‘s David Cross, Divorce‘s Tracy Letts, Transparent‘s Bradley Whitford, and GLOW‘s Alison Brie.
The film follows on from the success of journalistic thriller Spotlight, and even features the same news room and editor as 1974’s legendary film All The President’s Men. Jason Robards won an Oscar then for his portrayal of the hard-driving editor during the Watergate scandal.
Will Meryl or Tom have similar luck? We reckon it’s a pretty safe bet. Watch the trailer and see what you think:
The Post opens in select theaters on December 22, going on general release on January 12, or, in other words, right in the middle of awards season.
