Forget frequent film-fellows Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone — there’s another on-screen couple in town, and their names are Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.
Okay, so maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Eddie and Felicity are so far only in talks to star in a new film called The Aeronauts, according to Varsity, but that doesn’t stop us getting excited about the two Theory of Everything leads teaming up again.
This new film is set in Victorian England, and will see them play two real-life figures again, namely scientist James Glaisher and balloon pilot Amelia Wren, who, in 1862, embarked on an extraordinary journey to discover the “secrets of the heavens” that ended in an epic fight for survival when the balloon went too high.
A tale of two nineteenth-century hot air balloonists, you say? Sounds epic. Sign us up.
It’s written by Jack Thorne, who’s responsible for a lot of brilliant things at the moment, including Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, currently playing in the West End and on Broadway, and new musical drama The Eddy from La La Land director Damien Chazelle. And it’ll be directed by Tom Harper, who’s previously overseen War & Peace and episodes of Peaky Blinders.
Chief among its attractions, however, will be Eddie and Felicity’s reunion in the title roles. Their previous film together The Theory of Everything was extremely well received; in fact, their respective performances as the famed physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Hawking garnered each of them a BAFTA and Oscar nomination, with Eddie eventually beating out his mate and fellow Hawking-impersonator Benedict Cumberbatch to win one of the coveted golden statuettes.
Expectations for The Aeronauts will therefore be very high. And if the current talks are successful, then the film could go into production as early as spring 2018.
