WATCH: Henry Cavill Posts a Moving Tribute to His Mustache

It’s over. The scandal that has engulfed Hollywood for the past few months has ended not with a bang, but with a whimper: that’s right, Henry Cavill has shaved his mustache.

The Superman star plays baddie August Walker in Mission: Impossible‘s sixth outing Fallout, and, as we all know, baddies can usually be identified by their hirsute upper lips.

Just think Dick Dastardly, Captain Hook, or Daniel Day-Lewis‘s impressive handlebar mustache in Gangs of New York.

Henry dutifully grew a lip caterpillar of his own, and it can be seen in all its glory in the trailer released last month.

There was just one problem: he also needed to reshoot some scenes as Superman for Justice League, which opened in theaters last last year. Cue mustache-gate, which saw DC filmmakers using high-end CGI techniques to “remove” all traces of fur from The Man of Steel’s top lip.

Henry clearly liked his MI:6 look, as he kept the ‘tache for much longer than the shoot required. Nothing can last forever, though. He took to Instagram yesterday (March 21) to announce his lip-hugging friend had bitten the dust, memorializing its brief but turbulent life with Sarah McLachlan tear-jerker “I Will Remember You.”
