Kate Winslet is a dab hand at making us cry, as any Titanic fan will tell you, but her next film looks set to take us to new heights of blubbing.
Deadline reports Kate has signed on to star in Blackbird, alongside The Young Pope‘s Diane Keaton and Alice in Wonderland‘s Mia Wasikowska.
So far, so exciting: that’s one heck of an acting triumvirate there. But the film tells the story of Lily (Keaton), a terminally ill mother who brings her family together for one last weekend before she intends to kill herself. Kate and Mia play her daughters.
Ah. So it’s not a comedy then.
The film is in fact a remake of 2014 Danish film Silent Heart by the Oscar-winning director Bille August. That version starred Paprika Steen in Kate’s role, the Danish actor best known for 1998’s Festen (or The Celebration, as it was known in the U.S.), and garnered rave reviews when it premiered at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2014, with The Hollywood Reporter calling it a “powerful” and “nuanced” take on an “intimate family drama.”
It certainly sounds a lot smaller scale than, say, Avatar 2, the sequel Kate is currently filming with Titanic director James Cameron. And it’s not suffering any of the setbacks of that mega-movie.
Blackbird starts filming next month in London. There’s no release date yet but the film will likely hit theaters in 2019.
