The first teaser trailer for Rocketman has touched down, just days after we got our first look at Taron Egerton as Sir Elton John.
“There are moments in a rock star’s life that define who he is,” a voice teases, over snippets from Elton’s life, his childhood, and some of his battles with personal demons. “Where there was darkness, there is now you – and it’s going to be a wild ride.”
It certainly seems so. Elton’s spectacular outfits are on full display, not to mention his flamboyant performances. Directed by Bohemian Rhapsody‘s Dexter Fletcher and written by Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall, the movie will also see Jamie Bell star as Elton’s songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton’s former lover and manager John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as his mother.
That’s not to say it’s a true biopic, though. The film documents Elton’s rise to global superstardom in the early 1970s, but the filmmakers are keen to emphasize that it is a “true fantasy” rather than a traditional life story.
“Everyone thinks it’s a biopic. It isn’t,” Taron told Collider in May. “It’s a fantasy musical so it’s actually his songs used to express important beats in his life at emotional moments. He’s not the only character that sings. It’s going to be fun.”
Rocketman will arrive in theaters on May 17, 2019 — so not a long, long time to wait, then.
