There have been so many twists and turns to this story, we didn’t want to believe it until we saw it with our own eyes, but it’s official, the Deadwood movie is happening, and it is already in production.
Deadline reports cameras started rolling on the feature-length follow-up yesterday (November 5), 12 years after the series ended its three seasons on HBO.
Creator David Milch has reportedly written a “terrific” script, while Daniel Minahan, who directed a handful of Deadwood episodes during the show’s original run, will helm the two-hour movie.
We’ve also got the first ever indication what the film will be about: set 10 years after the events of season three, it will see the show’s characters reunite to celebrate South Dakota becoming a state in 1889. According to the film’s synopsis, “Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”
Most of the original cast are returning, including Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst).
The movie is expected to premiere on HBO next year, adding to the list of some of our favorite shows — Game of Thrones, Veep, and Downton Abbey, just to name a few of them — making a long-awaited return in 2019.
Okay, so color us excited. We’ll still keep our fingers crossed though, just in case.
