Tom Hiddleston gave his fans a shock yesterday (November 14) when he posted a video of himself looking sad in a tunnel via his social media accounts.

Okay, so not just sad. In the clip, Tom walks toward the camera along the famous Leake Street graffiti tunnel in London, and reacts to something he can see but we can’t, until one word appears on screen: BETRAYAL.

Fear not, this is not an oblique reference to Taylor Swift. The Thor star is in fact acting, to announce his upcoming role in a new West End production of Betrayal by Harold Pinter.

The play tells the story of two married couples and a seven-year extramarital affair, and is being put on as part of a season of Pinter plays in London, 40 years after it first opened.

According to What’s On Stage, Tom will play Robert, the role originated by Daniel Massey (Star!) in 1978. By the looks of this clip, it’ll be another tour de force by Tom, whose acclaimed stage performances include playing Hamlet in a charity production directed by Sir Kenneth Branagh last year, and Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse in 2014.

Of his return to stage, Tom said: “Betrayal is a masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd‘s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I am so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.”

Betrayal will run from March 5 to June 1, 2019 at the Harold Pinter theatre in London.
