Casting News: Hugh Grant to Star in Psychological Thriller ‘The Undoing’

Hugh Grant has signed up for one of his most serious roles yet, fresh off his recent turn as Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal.

Variety reports the Four Weddings star will play a disappearing husband in The Undoing, an upcoming psychological thriller starring Nicole Kidman on HBO.

It’s a departure from Hugh’s usual roles, which are often either played for laughs (see his forelock-tugging characters of the 1990s), or beautifully ambiguous, as in his portrayal of St. Clair Bayfield in Florence Foster Jenkins, or give him a chance to send himself up, like washed-up actor Phoenix Buchanan in Paddington 2.

No, this one sounds out-and-out sinister: in The Undoing, his character Jonathan Sachs goes missing after a violent death, leaving his therapist wife Grace (Kidman) to figure out what on earth happened.

The miniseries is based on a 2014 novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz, and has been adapted into six episodes by David E. Kelley, who was also responsible for the scripts of Nicole’s recent TV project Big Little Lies (not to mention Ally McBeal back in the day).

And if that didn’t already scream “prestige drama,” then the director’s name ought to do it: Susanne Bier, who helmed The Night Manager in 2016, will be in charge.

Are you excited to see Hugh in a drama like this?
