Huzzah! The ‘Doctor Strange’ Sequel is Definitely Happening with Benedict Cumberbatch Returning

Things didn’t look good for Doctor Strange at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, but never fear: Benedict Cumberbatch will return for another solo outing as the Sorcerer Supreme.

The Hollywood Reporter got the scoop yesterday (December 11), with news that Scott Derrickson had signed on the dotted line to direct the sequel. He directed the original film, which raked in a whopping $675 million worldwide when it was released in 2016, making a follow-up inevitable.

Inevitable it may be, but there was just one problem: Marvel has been keeping mum about “Phase Four,” the fourth and final phase of their Cinematic Universe (MCU) that starts with the next Avengers movie in 2019.

That movie got a title only last week, though it was heralded by Doctor Strange himself in the dying minutes of Infinity War, when he announced, “We’re in the endgame now.”

We certainly are. As well as Avengers: Endgame, Phase Four will include a return for everyone’s favorite webslinger in Spider-Man: Far from Home, with a Black Widow solo movie and a Black Panther sequel also reportedly in the works.

A new Doctor Strange movie can now be added to the slate. Not only would it signal a return for Benedict’s goatee beard, but also presumably his right-hand man Wong (Benedict Wong), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), his rival Master of the Mystic Arts Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and fellow surgeon Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams).

The start date has not been announced, with the script yet to be written.

Are you excited to see another instalment in the Doctor Strange story?
